Sunday’s dramatic quarterfinal between Mumbai City FC and Chennaiyin FC resulted in a 5-3 victory for Mumbai City FC after extra time, advancing them to the semifinals of the Durand Cup football competition. At Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Mumbai’s Lallianzuala Chhangte scored a brace while Stewart scored a hat-trick via goals in the 40th, 100th, and 118th minutes. Rahim Ali, Jockson Dhas, and Croatian striker Petar Sliskovic each scored one goal for Chennaiyin. At the same location on Wednesday, Mumbai City FC will take on Mohammedan Sporting in the first semifinal.
Stewart made the difference for Mumbai City as Chennaiyin chased the game frantically in extra-time. When the match was undecided at 4-3, the Scotsman pulled away from opponent defender and sent the ball past a diving Debjit with his preferred left foot to complete a well-earned hat-trick and seal the victory for his team.
Hyderabad FC will play Rajasthan United in a crucial Durand Cup Quarterfinal match at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Monday after a dominant performance that saw them finish first in Group C of the competition. The surprise performer in the Durand Cup this year was Rajasthan United, who advanced from their group ahead of Kolkata heavyweights ATK Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.
