However, one Sri Lankan bowler left no stone unturned in getting his country back into the game. Dunith Wellalage, an emerging spin prodigy from Sri Lanka, stunned the Indian top order in a highly anticipated match during the Super Four phase of the Asia Cup 2023.
In his first three overs, this incredible 20-year-old cricketer dismissed the captain of India, Rohit Sharma, as well as the gifted Shubman Gill and the prolific Virat Kohli. To further underline his prowess, he later claimed the wicket of KL Rahul during the innings.

Who is Dunith Wellalage?
Dunith Wellalage is a renowned Sri Lankan cricketer. He has been in the news because he gave a prolific performance in the Asia Cup against India by taking four wickets.
His full name is Dunith Nethmika Wellalage. He was born on 9 January 2003 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He attended St. Sebastian’s College in Moratuwa and St. Joseph’s College in Colombo for his academic studies.
His height is 5 feet 10 inches, or 76 cm, and he is currently 20 years old. He is currently single and unmarried and has never played in the IPL.
His career
Dunith Wellalage made his List A debut in December 2019 for the Lankan Cricket Club. He led Sri Lanka in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in January 2022, and he excelled there with a five-wicket haul in the first game. In the following game, he replicated this feat.
Ultimately, his outstanding performance came when he scored a century and helped Sri Lanka win the U-19 World Cup. With 17 dismissals, he finished as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker.
Dunith Wellalage traveled to England with the Sri Lanka Emerging Team in April 2022, making his T20 debut in May. He played his first ODI in June against Australia before being selected for Sri Lanka’s Test team to face Australia.
He joined the Lanka Premier League’s Jaffna Kings in July. Soon after, he also played his debut Test match against Pakistan. Later, he was chosen for the ODI and T20 squads for Sri Lanka’s series against New Zealand in March 2023.
