Plessis is considered as one of the brightest prospects of the UFC and looks destined to find himself alongside some of the best and elite middleweight fighters in the coming years.
Dricus du Plessis brief bio and nationality
Dricus du Plessis was born on January 14, 1994, and Dricus hails from the Hatfield region of Pretoria, South Africa. The 29-year-old fights out of Team CIT MMA, which is also a team based in South Africa.
Over the years there have been a lot of controversy surrounding his nationality. However, Dricus du Plessis is indeed South African by birth and his nationality is as such. Moreover, his UFC profile also states that du Plessis currently resides in Welkom, South Africa.
There is currently not much information available about his parents, although du Plessis did go on Instagram to wish his mother on Mother’s Day back in 2022.
The debate surrounding his nationality is very intense that during the UFC 285 post-fight press conference, Dricus had to clarify that he was a real African fighter. He also added that he still resided in the country and earned his reputation in the continent itself.
However, several like Israel Adesanya and Kamaru Usman were surprisingly offended byt the statement. Both fighters were born in Nigeria but later migrated to New Zealand and the USA respectively.
In fact, Adesanya had an extremely angry reaction towards the statement while Usman suggested that du Plessis was not a real African since his parents moved to the continent only after he was born. However, as stated above, this is definitely not true and the two fighters simply have to accept the truth.

Dricus du Plessis had quite a rough journey on his way to the top. Before becoming a professional fighter, Dricus was surprisingly an agricultural economics student at the University of Pretoria.
However, du Plessis soon dropped out of college in order to pursue his passion. The South African fighter is currently a 2nd-degree black belt in kickboxing and he made his transition to MMA back in 2013. He then went on to make his UFC debut in October 2020.
In spite of his success inside the Octagon, there were various question marks regarding his cardio. However, the reason behind his cardio was soon clarified after a discovery that a brutal nose injury had left him unable to take in more than 8% of oxygen.
