The immense kaiju scope of the battle is better emphasized in the manga. Each strike from Giant Orange Piccolo and Cell Max feels forceful and dominates the picture. The anime occasionally loses this sense of proportion. The manga also features a more menacing depiction of Cell Max’s mace-like tail. The film’s treatment of the tail is more subtle than the manga’s, but it still plays a significant role.
Not only is the artwork much better in this chapter, but Gohan also makes some great progress. The end of his long quest for absolute power is a cathartic experience. The manga treats this accomplishment seriously, honoring those who have followed Gohan’s tale from the beginning.
The manga polish improves upon this classic tale, putting more of an emphasis on wonder and character development than a plot summary. The fact that the story doesn’t revolve only around Goku and Vegeta is one of the most interesting things about this arc of Dragon Ball Super.
