Dr SS Badrinath, the visionary founder and chairman of Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 83, have a look at his cause of death and family
The news of his demise was confirmed by Tamil Nadu Congress Vice President Rama Suganthan, and former Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu, expressed condolences on his death.

Although the news of demise was confirmed by VP Rama Suganthan, as of now there isn’t any information available regarding the Dr. SS Badrinath’s passing but is said to have died after a long illness.
The last rites were held after 9.30 A.M. today at the Besant Nagar crematorium.
Who is Dr. SS Badrinath?
83 year old Dr. SS Badrinath leaves behind a lasting legacy as the driving force behind the iconic hospital that has served and continues to serve thousands of patients. Born on 24 February 1940 in Triplicane, Chennai, Dr. Badrinath faced adversity early in life, losing both parents during his teenage years.
Despite starting his education at the age of seven due to a childhood illness, Dr. Badrinath excelled academically. He completed his studies at Loyola College in Chennai and Madras Medical College, securing the highest marks in ophthalmology during university exams.
His pursuit of excellence led him to the United States, where he completed his post-graduation at institutions like Grasslands Hospital, New York University, and Brooklyn Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Achievements
Dr. Badrinath achieved notable milestones, including passing the examinations for the Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Canada in 1969 and the American Board Examination in Ophthalmology in 1970.
In 1978, he founded the Medical Research Foundation, with Sankara Nethralaya emerging as its hospital unit. Dr. Badrinath’s contributions earned him the prestigious Padma Bhushan from the Government of India in 1999, recognizing his efforts in establishing a hospital that provided quality eye care at an affordable cost, along with contributions to education, training, and research in vision sciences.
Wife and Children
Dr. SS Badrinath is survived by his wife, Dr. Vasanthi Iyer, and their two sons. Married in 1967 after meeting in Brooklyn in 1966, their partnership endured through decades.
