Prediction
In the opening round of the 2022 Moselle Open, Dominic Thiem, the winner of the 2020 US Open, will face Richard Gasquet.
After a hiatus due to injury, Thiem returned in late March of this year. However, his recovery was hampered by the fact that he was eliminated in the first round of each of the first seven competitions he entered. He participated in a Challenger competition after being eliminated from the French Open, where he finally won a match but that only lasted till the second round. He decided to skip Wimbledon and compete in a few clay events after the grasscourt Major was done. He did well in those, progressing to the quarterfinal rounds in Bastad and Kitzbuhel as well as the semifinal round in Gstaad.
Recently, by making it to the Rennes Challenger final, the 29-year-old has already achieved his best season-to-date performance.
Meanwhile, Richard Gasquet continues to compete with youngsters. The Geneva Open semifinal appearance, which featured a victory over Daniil Medvedev, was his greatest performance thus far in the year. A total of four tournaments this year saw Gasquet go to the quarterfinals.
Gasquet’s season as a whole has been better, but going into this match, Thiem seems to have found his form again. The Austrian will be hopeful after making it all the way to the Rennes championship game. Both players excel at one-handed backhands, and they routinely use them to hit some stunning winners. Thiem has been playing well over the past week, despite the fact that he still has a few kinks to iron out. He needs to balance his groundstrokes’ power and consistency because up until this point, he has been sacrificing one for the other.
