Prediction
In the 2022 Gijon Open’s second round, reigning US Open champion Dominic Thiem will face World No. 62 Marcos Giron.
Recently, Thiem has participated in the Tel Aviv Open and the Moselle Open. Both times he was defeated by Hubert Hurkacz and Maric Cilic in the second round, preventing him from advancing. First-round competition in Gijon pitted Thiem against Joao Sousa. With an early break to lead 3-1 in the first set, the Austrian struck first. With a second serve break, he increased the strength of his advantage and won the set 6-2. Thiem delivered a bagel to win the match 6-2, 6-0, turning in his finest season-to-date performance. The second set was even more lopsided.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas, a local favourite, was paired up against Marcos Giron in the opening round. He broke serve early in the first set to go up 3-1, but the Spaniard won five of the following six games to steal the set from him. In the opening moments of the second set, Giron twice broke his rival’s serve to take a 4-1 lead.
The next few games were won by Ramos-Vinolas to make it 4-3, but the American didn’t give up his advantage and managed to win the second set to keep himself in the running to win the match 4-6, 6-4, 6- 2, Giron, however, was the player who was more in control, winning five straight games.
Even though Giron dropped the opening set, he rallied to defeat Ramos-Vinolas. He may find it challenging to duplicate his valour from the previous round if he gives up a similar advantage to Thiem. Due to his excellent baseline game, the American can face up against the 2020 US Open champion from the back of the court.
Thiem has endured a challenging journey since he started his rehabilitation earlier this season. If he maintains his performance from the previous round, he should be able to beat Giron. He seems to be gradually regaining his best form.
