Prediction
Dominic Thiem and Joao Sousa will face off in the Gijon Open’s first round on Monday.
The Austrian returned to competition during the clay-court season after a protracted hiatus to recover from a wrist injury. Making it to the Swiss Open semifinals in Gstaad, where he lost to Matteo Berrettini, was Thiem’s best performance thus far this year.
The former World No. 3 advanced to the round of 16 in the Moselle Open and Tel Aviv Open before losing to Hubert Hurkacz and Marin Cilic, respectively. He had lost to Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round of the US Open.
On the other hand, Sousa defeated Emil Ruusuvuori in the final to win the Maharashtra Open in Pune, his lone championship of the year. The Portuguese player also made it to the Geneva Open championship game but lost to Casper Ruud. Sousa made it to the second round of the US Open before losing to Cameron Norrie in straight sets. Then he was eliminated in the opening round of the Tel Aviv Open and the Moselle Open.
Thiem has a strong backhand that is still very effective. The Austrian has a decent forehand with strong topspin and a first serve that is good. He likes to play aggressively from the back of the court, but he can also play strong defence. Because his serve isn’t the best one available, Sousa will primarily rely on his groundstrokes. The Portuguese will try to take use of their powerful forehand.
Sousa is ranked higher, but Thiem has been playing much better tennis lately. As a result, the Austrian will be considered the match’s favourite.
Thiem should be able to defeat Sousa, whose performances lately have been poor, even though he is still far from reaching the kind of form he displayed a few years ago.
