Prediction

On Friday, former US Open champion Dominic Thiem will face off against World No. 29 Francisco Cerundolo for a place in the Gijon Open semifinals.

Thiem is returning to tennis after a nine-month hiatus due to a wrist injury. He performed well in July, making it to the semifinals at Kitzbuhel, Bastad, and Gstaad. The 29-year-old made it all the way to the Rennes Challenger final before falling to Ugo Humbert after being eliminated in the opening round of the US Open. After two early exits at Metz and Tel Aviv, the World No. 165 has found his form again with two excellent victories to go to this week’s quarterfinals at Gijon. The Austrian initially defeated Joao Sousa 6-2, 6-0 before upsetting Marcos Giron 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Francisco Cerundolo, a 24-year-old emerging star on the tour, has been making waves. At the Argentina Open the year before, the Argentine made his first-ever ATP Tour home final. He took it a step further this year and became the first person to win the title at Bastad. By defeating the top seed Casper Ruud on the way to win, he earned his first-ever top-10 victory. In addition to winning the Santa Cruz Challenger, the young player also achieved other outstanding feats, making it to the semifinals in Hamburg, Miami, and Rio de Janeiro.

Cerundolo’s performance has slightly dipped in recent weeks. He snapped a seven-match losing streak this week in Gijon with a 7-6(5), 6-2 triumph over Manuel Guinard on Thursday.

Cerundolo’s immense talent can make his task difficult. Despite the fact that he prefers playing on clay, his strength and determination, especially off his forehand, make him a challenging opponent to face. The Argentine’s 25 triumphs over Guinard’s 17 unforced errors in his Gijon debut bear this out.
Cerundolo, on the other hand, has failed to put victories together since July and has been incredibly unpredictable during the past several weeks. Cerundolo might not have many options if Thiem keeps moving and launching groundstrokes like he did in the final stages of his match against Giron.
