This is hard to watch – Miami Dolphins qb Tua Tagovailoa suffered two apparent head injuries in less than a week. I walk @ChristineRomans through how serious these injuries could be and what the @NFL 's protocols say about how this should have been handled pic.twitter.com/RT802djM6f

Following the incident, officials stopped the game for several minutes as medical personnel tended to Tagovailoa.
Tua Tagovailoa Injury Update And Concussion Protocol
The hard knock completely immobilized Tua Tagovailoa’s head and neck as a result of which he was wheeled off the field on a stretcher as per the league’s concussion protocol.
He was later taken by ambulance to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
The Dolphins at first announced that Tagovailoa suffered head and neck injuries, but later stated that he was conscious and had movement in his extremities.
After the game, Miami coach Mike McDaniel stated that Tagovailoa had suffered a concussion. However, it looks like the injury won’t be too much of a concern as the team later announced that the quarterback has returned to South Florida with the team on Thursday night.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler also reported that Tagovailoa was back at his home and already in “good spirits.” The report also stated that Tagovailoa will expectedly undergo further testing.
McDaniel further added that Tagovailoa is in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Medical officials evaluated McDaniel for a concussion in Week 3 after he hit his head on the turf and staggered while trying to walk.
This time, the injury was more serious and branded a “fencing response,” as his arms came up to his face and his hands went rigid. A fencing response is considered a “no-go symptom” under the league’s concussion protocol.
Measures Were Already Underway Pre-Game
During Thursday night’s game, the Dolphins were already prepared to take off Tagovailoa before the match ended. This was because of the back and ankle injuries he sustained on Sunday.
The team had three active quarterbacks on the game-day roster — Tagovailoa, Teddy Bridgewater and rookie Skylar Thompson.
McDaniel cleared all claims about the team mishandling the quarterback stating that Tagovailoa was clear to return for Thursday’s game. He said:
I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself if I prematurely put someone out there and in harm’s way.
McDaniel also however acknowledged the nature of the controversy:
I get the optics. I get exactly what it looks like. I get people’s concern. One thing I can exude with 100 percent conviction is that everyone in this building had the correct process and diligence.”
After Tagovailoa was taken off the field following the injury, Bridgewater entered the game in place of him. The veteran was the Broncos’ primary starter last season and has a career record of 33-30-1.
