The Doha Diamond League 2023 will take place at the Qatar Sports Club in Doha today, 5th May, 2023.
The Diamond League
The Diamond League is an annual tournament featuring a series of top-tier track and field competitions organised by World Athletics. The upcoming meeting in Doha is the first leg of the 2023 Diamond League series. The final event will be a two-day Diamond League Final completion in Eugene on September 16 and 17.
Athletes will win points based on their performances in each Diamond League leg. The top eight athletes from each event will then qualify for the final event. At the end of the finals, each winner of the final in each event will win a Diamond League trophy.
Neeraj Chopra first Indian Diamond League champion
Indian Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian athlete to win the Diamond League champion last year. He won the trophy after winning the grand final held in Zurich back in September last year.
Chopra entered the finals breaking records, as he became the first Indian to win a Diamond League event when he won the competition in Lausanne in August. Prior to that, he beat his national javelin record at the Stockholm Diamond League back in June with an impressive 89.94m throw.

This year, Neeraj will face off against the following notable competitors:
- Anderson Peters (Grenada) Reigning world javelin champion
- Jakub Vadlejch (Czech Republic) Tokyo Olympics silver medallist
- Julian Weber (Germany) European champion
- Keshorn Walcott (Trinidad and Tobago) former Olympic champion
Other Olympic and world champions in other events
Besides Neeraj Chopra, several other Olympic and world champions are set to be part of the competition opener in Doha.
Jamaican athlete Shericka Jackson who is a five-time Olympic medallist will feature in the 100m. Dina Asher-Smith from Great Britain who is the former 200m world champion will also compete in the event.
Meanwhile in the men’s events, the top athletes in action are: Andre De Grasse, men’s 200m Olympic champion from Canada, Fred Kerley men’s 100m world champion and Olympic silver medallist from the USA and fellow compatriot Kenny Bednarek, Olympic and world 200m silver medallist.
