India was represented by model Divita Rai, 25, who won the title of “Miss Diva Universe” the previous year. Divita crushed the competition and made it to the top 16 this year. Rai selected a stunning cape made by a Punjabi artist who is a part of the LGBTQ community for the cape round.
The model attracted a lot of attention with her stunning avatar. In pink swimwear and a custom cape by Param Sahib, Divita ruled the runway. Her social media posts claim that the “Dil Se” cape is a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and a testament to unconditional love.
Who Is Divita Rai?
Divita Rai, a native of Mangaluru, Karnataka, completed her studies at the Sir JJ College of Architecture in Mumbai. The 25-year-old Indian model came in second place at Miss Diva Universe 2021, but Harnaaz Sandhu took home the title (who went on to become Miss Universe).
She earned the sub-contest titles of Miss IQ, Miss Lifestyle, and Miss Sudoku at the Miss Diva 2021 competition. Later in August 2022, Harnaaz Sandhu, the departing titleholder, gave Rai the title of Miss Diva Universe.

For the 71st Miss Universe 2023 national costume competition, Rai dressed as “Sone Ki Chidiya.” Abhishek Sharma, who created the costume, claimed that the “ethereal portrayal of India” served as inspiration. She donned a cape, went by the name Dil Se—an homage to love devoid of judgment—and praised the LGBTQ+ community for the swimsuit category.
India’s Harnaaz Sandhu, the 22-year-old winner of the 70th Miss Universe pageant, was crowned the 71st Miss Universe. She entered the stage in a lovely blue lehenga, making an impressive first impression.
Divita made it to the semi-finals and was a part of the last top 16 but failed to make the cut to the top 5.
India, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Laos, Australia, Haiti, South Africa, Portugal, Canada, Peru, Trinidad & Tobago, Colombia, the United States, Spain, and Venezuela were among the 16 nations represented among this year’s finalists. R’Bonney Gabriel of the United States won the competition, with Amanda Dudamel of Venezuela taking first place and Andrena Martnez of the Dominican Republic taking second place.
