On March 30, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri will show her pre-collection of women’s ready-to-wear for Autumn 2023 at the Gateway of India monument, a historic archway on the waterfront of Mumbai.
The collection, which was presented in Paris last December, is inspired by traditional Indian craftsmanship and textiles with strong colours, numerous prints and, of course, embroidery The collection will include pieces that reference traditional Indian silhouettes and will have embroidered embellishments by Chanakya, a Mumbai-based atelier. The collection will be out come April, 2023.

The event is being organized with the support of Directorate of tourism of Maharashtra government. Earlier in a statement while describing the upcoming event, Dior said that, “For Maria Grazia Chiuri, each collection is an opportunity to make new connections between different domains of craftsmanship, ancestral traditions and the most ground-breaking innovation.”
Let us remind you, it’s not the first time when the French fashion house has held a show at a historical site. Dior decamped to Cairo for its autumn 2023 menswear collection, presenting 75 looks against the illuminated Pyramids of Giza.
The collection and show, dubbed Celestial, were inspired by a “fascination with the ancient world” and “how the past shapes the future or an idea of the future from the past,” according to Kim Jones, creative director for Dior Men, in his show notes. The palette of the collection was inspired by its North African location, with neutral greys, beiges, and whites interspersed with pops of bright yellow and orange.
Jones called it a graduation of greys giving way to a “palette of the desert — from daytime to nightfall, with hints of a fiery sunset filtering in between”.
Models looked like they were headed on a sci-fi expedition to the moon or “galaxies far, far away”, donning sunglasses, helmets, backpacks, utility boots and mosquito netting as a form of “futuristic armoury”.
The occasion pulled In a high-profile gathering of people that included Equation One winner Sir Lewis Hamilton, British on-screen character Robert Pattinson, Scottish performing artist Thomas Doherty, South Korean rapper and Dior Worldwide Minister Gracious Se-hun, Spanish performing artist Aron Flute player, Colombian artist Manuel Turizo and American show Golden Valletta.
Kiuri will definitely aim to recreate some of that magic in India later this month.
