Ding was a winner at the 2019 Grand Chess Tour where he defeated Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and won the Sinquefield Cup of 2019. Ding is the first Chinese player in history who played in the Candidates Tournament and passed the 2800 Elo mark on the FIDE world rankings.

In 2016, with a Blitz rating of 2875, Ding was regarded as the highest-rated Blitz player all across the world. In 2023, World Chess Championship game number ten between Ding Liren and Ian Nepomniachtchi ended up in a draw. Nepo won 2nd and 5th games and Ding marked a win in games 4th and 6th.

Ding Liren career
Ding Liren won the Chinese Chess Championship 3 times in 2009, 2011, and 2012. He has represented China at four Chess Olympiads from 2012 to 2018, winning team gold medals in 2014 and 2018 and individual bronze and gold medals in 2014 and 2018.
Ding was the winner of the team gold and individual silver at the World Team Championships of 2015. In August 2015, Ding was considered as the second Chinese player after Wang Yue to break into the list of the top 10 of FIDE world rankings. While in 2016, with a Blitz rating of 2875, he was named as the highest-rated Blitz player globally.
In 2017, Ding became the first Chinese player to qualify for a Candidates Tournament, Penultimate Stage in World Championship. In the Candidates Tournament 2018, Ding was in fourth place with 1 win and 13 draws. He was the only candidate who did not have a loss at the event.
In 2023, Ding played chess at Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2023, where he lost to Richárd Rapport, R Praggnanandhaa
