Although these three words sounds familiar but these three are way different from each other and because they sound very similar, many confused them as identical. However, they aren’t the same, so, today we are going to tell you about the difference between the three.
Difference between Manga, Manhua, Manhwa and meaning explained
For those who are curious about the difference between the three, let us tell you, the main fundamental difference between these three types of graphic novel is their country of origin. They are published in Japan and are most popular type of Graphic novels.
Manhua has recently seen a rise in Korea and also enjoys international attention. Manhwas are stories published in China and very limited because of the censorship laws in China. However, several Webtoons are making the trend popular.
Now coming to everyone’s favorite, Manga, is a style of Graphic novel where several stories are crafted with the help of artwork. Manga typically originated in Japan and the creators of these novels are usually called Mangaka.
Mangas are written for different target audiences, which is why, people of different age group can read and enjoy them. Meanwhile, it’s popularity has also seen rise because of the number of anime being adapted from these novels.
Most western anime watchers refers to Manga when the season ended with cliffhangers or when they are curious to know more about the story. A few of the famous Manga which have adapted into anime includes, Attack on Titan, Tokyo Revengers, One Punch Man, Naruto, Baruto, Demon Slayer among many more.

If we speak about the history of Manhwa, it dates back to 1910, when Japanese soldiers brought their novels to the Korea. At the time, the culture and language of the manga were introduced into the Korean society and at the same time, the Manhwa started publishing.
Although initially, they were used as propaganda for war efforts nd discussing political ideologies for the masses, however, later it saw a decline due to censorship laws in Korea.
But in recent years, Manhwa has again seen a rise in a it’s popular due to their digitization, known as Webtoons. A few Webtoons have also been adapted into anime like solo leveling lookism.
On the other hand, Manhua, which is also a graphic style novel published in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan was introduced back comparatively later than Japan and Korea. It begin in early 20th century with the war stories about Japnese wars and the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong.
However, they had difficulty making a place in the international markets due to strict laws in China. Furthermore their legality of publishing Manhua oversees.
