Head to Head: 1-0

1-0 is Sock’s advantage over Schwartzman in their matchup. At the 2017 Italian Open, he triumphed in their prior match in three sets.

Prediction

Diego Schwartzman, the world’s 16th-ranked player, had a run to the semifinals at Roland-Garros before being defeated by Rafael Nadal, the eventual winner, to record his best Grand Slam performance in 2020. The 30-year-old went on to reach an ATP world ranking high of eighth that season, so becoming the first player to ever qualify for the ATP Finals. Here in New York, Schwartzman has lost in the quarterfinals twice, to Pablo Carreno Busta in 2017 and to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in 2019.

On the other hand, Jack Sock, a former world number eight, advanced to the third round at Wimbledon last month but has had trouble making an impression this season in singles draws on tour.

However, the American has been putting in a lot of effort in doubles, taking home titles at Indian Wells in March and the Citi Open earlier this month with Nick Kyrgios.

Schwartzman will enter this competition as the favourite because his results have been substantially better than Sock’s. Although he has a 7-6 record on hardcourts, the Argentinian has won the most of his matches this season on clay. On the surface, it’s just slightly superior to his rival’s 4-6 record.

Though he occasionally struggles to execute that shot consistently throughout a match, Sock’s forehand is still a force to be reckoned with. Also quite a weapon is his serve.

In terms of return games won this season, Schwartzman leads the tour. He is a competent returner. The American must execute his serve flawlessly to avoid facing challenges from his opponent.

Sock is a fierce rival, but he is no longer the player he once was. He continues to perform well in doubles, but it seems like his singles career has reached a wall. He could compete with Schwartzman, but the Argentine ought to be able to hold his own.
