On June 13, 1994, 13-year-old Nicholas Barclay was playing basketball with his friends in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas and the teenager was Caucasian with light brown hair, blue eyes, and weighed around 79 pounds (36 kgs) and was 4’8” tall.

Three years after Nicholas went missing, Frรฉdรฉric Bourdin took over his identity and managed to convince the formerโ€™s family that he was Nicholas.

Nicholas Barclay was the youngest of three children, and had an older brother and sister with his older brother named Jason.

Despite the unsolved case, the documentary focuses on a man who claimed to be Nicholas.ย

His accent had altered, and his eyes had changed hue. In the end, everything was discovered to be a hoax, and the guy was actually Frederic Bourdin, a 23-year-old Frenchman who served as the main character’s imposter.ย

According to the reports, a private investigator discovered the truth five months after Bourdin pretended to be the grieving family’s lost son. It seems that he had previously committed similar crimes by pretending to be an orphan in Europe. Over the years, he is said to have taken on more than 40 different identities.ย

Charlie Parker, a dubious private investigator hired to investigate the matter, eventually aired his worries to Bourdin, who eventually disclosed his real identity.ย

Frederic Bourdin Was Behind The Bars

Yes, Frederic was put on trial and was sentenced for six years in prison when officials discovered his fraud. Naturally, as it became clear that the man wasn’t Nicholas, the search for the abducted boy picked back up. He hasn’t been located yet, though.ย

The reports claimed that after Bourdin’s release from jail in 2003, he returned to France but once again tried to pass as a teenage girl who had vanished in 1996.ย

Directors Take On The Movieย

In a prior interview with The Film Stage, the director of The Imposter shared some details about the challenging process:ย

“I was conducting research all the time. Before you sit down and conduct an interview, you can only conduct a small amount of research. But, during the conversation, details come to light and narratives take shape. Therefore, that is obviously a component of what a documentary is about.”ย

Netflix is now streaming The Imposter.
