The True Story Behind โThe Swimmersโ
Netflixโs โThe Swimmersโ, is based on the inspirational and true story of two sisters named Yusra and Sara Mardini. The two sisters lived their early childhood years in Darayya, Damascus, before eventually fleeing Syria as war refugees.
Even before fleeing, the Mardini sisters were talented swimmers with Yusra having even competed for Syria at the World Championships held in Turkey and Dubai.
Things complete turn however, when in 2015, war broke out in Syria. In order to find safety, the then teenage sisters had to flee their home and family behind. Yusra and Sara traveled through Lebanon and Turkey before making a perilous journey on boat into Greece.
The journey was treacherous, as the sisters had to share a dinghy with 18 other refugees, originally made to fit seven people. Moreover, to add further to their troubles, the boatโs motor got cut out.
Yusra, Sara and two other passengers made a shocking and brave move by jumping into the freezing water to push and pull the boat for three hours before eventually reaching land. The group landed on the Greek island of Lesbos.
Yusra and her sister eventually decided to settle in Germany where Yusra began swimming again. There she met German coach Sven Spannenkrebs. Sven helped Yusra to secure a spot on the Refugee Olympic Team for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
