The Heritage Walk Festival, organized by the tourism department of Delhi, got underway on Thursday and runs through December 31 with its schedule, dates, time and tickets detail now out

Participants in the Heritage Walk Festival can visit about 100 historical locations throughout the city. The celebration started at the Mutiny Memorial at Kamla Nehru Ridge in Civil Lines. According to an official, the festival aims to highlight Delhi’s centuries-old legacy and establish the city as a popular travel destination.

In order to honour British officers and their supporters who had lost their lives in the conflict, the British constructed the Mutiny Memorial during the 1857 independence movement. Nonetheless, it represents the assassinations of British officials and their allies as well as the Indian independence struggle.

The 80-day Heritage Walk Festival was opened by tourism minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, who stated during the historic walk that the public and younger generation were unaware of hundreds of hidden heritage places in Delhi.

“Through such programmes, the department aims to present the history of these priceless heritage sites to the people of Delhi and the nation. The goal is to make Delhi a major attraction not only in the country but also globally,” he said.

Bhardwaj mentioned that similar activities would be held in the future and that the department had been holding these programs on a regular basis.

The first Heritage Walk Festival will be led by historian Vikramjit Singh Rooprai on Thursday. It will start at the Mutiny Memorial on the Kamla Nehru Ridge, which is close to the Bara Hindu Rao hospital.

The historian explained that the Ashoka Pillar at the Ridge, which will also be included in the inaugural walk, is a unique piece of heritage because it was brought to Delhi in the 14th century by Feroz Shah Tughlaq from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, to foster communal harmony. The pillar was attributed to King Ashoka and bears an inscription inscribed with a Buddhist message.

The department will hold 37 history walks in December, 40 in November, and 23 in October. and the Delhi Tourism website provides details on forthcoming walks and tickets online booking as well.

The tariff of the Walk per day is Rs. 550/ Person ( Rs 524 + 5% GST) and the reporting time changes day to day depending on the walk. Most reporting times are at either 8:00am or 7:00pm with the walks set to take place from 10 October-31 December, 2024.
