The quadrennial tournament, which began on May 1 and will end on May 15, will include roughly 2,100 competitors from 72 countries.
This year’s event is notable for the absence of Russia, who topped the medal table in the previous edition in 2017. The Deaflympics, often known as the Deaflympiad, is an international multi-sport tournament for deaf athletes sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Last time around, Russia won the competition so thoroughly that 13 Deaf World Records. It was set by Russian swimmers at the 2017 Deaflympics and still stands today.

Meanwhile, India has sent 65 athletes to compete in 11 sports, making it the country’s largest delegation in the Deaflympics since its inception in 1965. In 1924, the Deaflympics, then known as the International Silent Games, was staged for the first time in Paris.
The 46-member Indian contingent won five medals one gold, one silver, and three bronze – at the previous event in Turkey in 2017. In the 74kg freestyle event, wrestler Virender Singh successfully maintained his title, while Tokyo Olympian golfer Diksha Nagar took silver. Both athletes are competing at the Deaflympics 2021, the Games’ 24th edition.
India’s Performance in Deaflympics:
Shooter Dhanush Srikanth gave India a great start in this edition by capturing gold in the 10m air rifle event on Day 3. Dhanush Srikanth won the tournament with a world-record score of 247.5.
The Deaflympics are being held for the first time in South America. The Games were supposed to take place from December 5 to 21, but owing to COVID-19, they were postponed to May 2022.
Dhanush and Shourya took a double podium in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle event, giving India their first medal of the Deaflympics 2021. The former won gold, while the latter took bronze before the Indian badminton mixed team won the Deaflympics after defeating Japan in the final.
Despite winning only three medals – the least among the top ten. India has broken into the top ten of the medal tally and sits comfortably in eighth place.
