Ending Explanation of Day Shift

It’s a bit of a difficult road for Bud but he’s able to take down the villainous bloodsucker, played by Karla Souza, who had previously kidnapped both his ex-wife and daughter.

Bud had some help from Seth, Heather and most importantly Big John Elliot. He tried to sacrifice himself by setting off a vest packed with explosives to kill a dozen vampires to save his friends.

Which allowed Bud to kill Audrey with his silver wire. Finally, everything just wrapped up and his family doesn’t have to relocate because he can get enough money for the teeth he scored from the whole adventure.

However, a big question remains in the final moments of the film. Big John emerges from a manhole unscathed and smoking when Bud and his family drive past.

He walks off into an unknown ally after saying “that’s what I love about LA .. all damn vampires”.

The quote used by Big John in the final moments of the film is a direct reference to the 1987 horror-comedy classic The Lost Boys.

The Lost Boys was directed by Joel Schumacher. The film ended with a character saying, “one thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach: all the damn vampires”.

Although, it’s not clear why the phrase has been used here, it may have been added simply as to create a clear homage to one of the iconic movies in its genre, or it can potentially be read in a different way.

While watching the film, we were led to believe that Big John had died by sacrificing himself. But his survival at the end suggests that he himself may have turned into a vampire.

By using the quote from The Lost Boys, loving a place rather than hating it for the presence of vampires, it’s likely that John could be one of them. This makes sense in the film as considering Seth, who has turned into one and yet is still able to maintain a regular appearance in the end.

During an interview with We Got This Covered, the director of the film explained how he pitched the Big John role to Snoop Dogg

He said, “I said, basically, ‘I want you to play your father,’ because his father was Southern. I said I want to take away all of that LA swagger and give you more of a country swagger”.
