The Davis Cup is the premier international team tennis event. The victorious team is referred to as the “World Champion team,” and the event’s organisers call it the “World Cup of Tennis.”

As a challenge between the United States and Great Britain, the rivalry started in 1900. Teams from 135 different countries competed as of 2016.

The World Group, which consists of the top 18 national teams, hosts the Davis Cup competition every year. The three regional zones (Americas, Asia/Oceania, and Europe/Africa) are where nations that do not belong to the World Group participate. Throughout the year, the competition is spread out over four weekends. The best of five matches are contested in each elimination round between competing nations, which takes place in one of the countries (4 singles, 1 doubles). Prior to each tournament, the ITF selects the hosts for every reasonable encounter.

The women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup is the Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Fed Cup. The only nations to have won both the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup in the same calendar year are Australia, Russia, the Czech Republic, and the United States
