Australia vs Netherlands

The Netherlands and Australia squared off in the opening knockout round on Tuesday, November 22. In the opening match of the tie, Jordan Thompson defeated Tallon Griekspoor by scores of 4-6, 7-5, and 6-3 in two hours and 55 minutes.

Later, Alex de Minaur defeated Botic van de Zandschulp, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, to help his team advance to the semifinals of the competition. This victory gave Australia a 2-0 lead over the Netherlands.

Spain vs Croatia

On Wednesday, Marin Cilic came from behind to defeat Pablo Carreno Busta in a three-hour match and advance Croatia to the Davis Cup semifinals. After 3 hours and 13 minutes, Cilic overcame a 4-1 deficit in the crucial tiebreaker to win 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (5) and give Croatia a 2-0 victory over Spain.

In the opening singles match, Borna Coric defeated Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 7-6 (4) to give Croatia the advantage. Croatia defeated Spain for the first time in the Davis Cup after three losses, and this victory sets up a semifinal matchup with Australia.

Davis Cup Final Team

It would be interesting to see who Jack Sock teams up with in the doubles round should the tie go the distance after Rajeev Ram’s unexpected exclusion from the USA team.

The singles, though, is much clearer, with San Diego-native Fritz having a breakout season that has seen the 25-year-old win three Tour-level championships, make his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon, and enter the Top 10.

In fact, Fritz was the first American to enter the Top 10 since Davis Cup teammate Sock in November 2017 after winning the Japan Open in October. Due to the fact that Tiafoe and Paul are also ready for battle, USA appears to have a lot of firepower.

Germany has an incredible doubles team in Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz, and if the match goes the distance, Germany will undoubtedly fancy their chances with the fate of their team in the hands of such a powerful couple.

To put things in perspective, Krawietz and Puetz have collaborated on eight occasions in Davis Cup matches, seven of which have ended in a victory.

When it came to singles, Jan-Lennard Struff was crucial for Germany during the September Group Stage, especially after the injured Alexander Zverev, who was then ranked No. 5, was forced to withdraw.

World No. 131 Yannick Hanfmann, who is a member of the German team in Malaga, lost the lone Davis Cup match he ever played in back in 2017. Struff would seem to be crucial to Germany’s chances, albeit these figures are subject to alter.

Two of the five players competing in the Final 8 who have already won the Davis Cup Juniors are Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov, who both stand out in the Canadian camp.

Since Shapovalov hasn’t competed for his country in the Davis Cup since the 2019 Finals, having him available and being able to have a singles squad that includes both him and Auger-Aliassime is a huge plus.

Davis Cup Schedule

The quarterfinals close Thursday, when the U.S. faces Italy, and Canada against Germany.

The world champions will be announced on Sunday, November 27, after the semi-final games on Friday and Saturday.
