Zimbabwe defeated Pakistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup
The current Zimbabwe team shocked everyone when they defended 130 runs agaisnt the power-packed Pakistani side. Zimbabwe’s courageous bowling effort has almost knocked last year’s Semi-finalist Pakistan out of the tournament.
The Zimbabwe team captain gave the credit for the win to coach Dave Houghton. Craige Ervin didn’t feel shy to acknowledge the work of his team’s coach on the mindsets of Zimbabwe players.
Ervin said ” “When Dave took over, he basically changed the way we did our training. He instilled a lot of belief back among each and every player. Every time he speaks, you can look around the room and you can tell that everybody is paying attention to him and everybody respects him…”
Zimbabwe Cricket team coach Dave Houghton’s Biography
Dave Houghton was born on 23rd June 1957 in Bulawayo. He did his schooling at Blackiston Primary school. Dave has 2 brothers who are older than him named Ken and Billy. All three of them were sports enthusiasts and their father supported them as well. One of his brothers played Hockey for the national team of Zimbabwe. And Billy played first-class cricket for Zimbabwe.
Dave’s incredible batting performance against the South African province’s school got him recognition. Dave was a great player in every sport he played. He was so much in love with doing glove work that he has kept in Football, Hocket, and Cricket at a professional level.
Dave Houghton is also an ex Police officer
Houghton has served Harare Police for several years to fulfill his financial needs after schooling. He was not able to continue his job after several years due to the new policies of the government.
The cricketing career of Dave Houghton
After the independence of Zimbabwe Dave started playing cricket again. He debuted for Zimbabwe 1983 against Australia in an ODI game at the World Cup in 1983. His debut wasn’t so memorable as he got out on duck. But Houghton didn’t look back after his debut and smashed 2 half-centuries in the next 5 games of that tournament.
Houghton is regarded as the greatest test batter produced by Zimbabwe along with Andy Flower. His short stint in the Test format contains many memorable knocks including his debut innings against India. Dave scored a century in his debut and also the inaugural test match of Zimbabwe in 1992.
Dave has an average of 43.05 and has scored 5 centuries in his test career of 22 matches.
