On Saturday, July 30, 2022, the fight took place at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn. The main card kicked-off at 9 p.m. ET/2 a.m. BST, with main event ring walks beginning at 11 p.m. ET/4 a.m. BST. The main event between Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez was a 12-round Junior Middleweight match with no title at stake.

Danny Garcia defeated Jose Benavidez Jr. on Saturday night to win his debut fight at super welterweight. Garcia climbed up a division to take on his opponent Friday night after being out of action since losing a title fight against Errol Spence Jr. in May 2020. The 34-year-old American won by majority decision after competing in all 12 rounds (116-112, 117-111, 114-114).

Danny Garcia vs Jose Benavidez Jr. Match Events & How it Unfolded?

Garcia appeared much faster and threw longer combinations in the opening round, improving his visual appeal. Benavidez kept a tight guard and was ready to strike when the time was right. Benavidez, who appeared physically larger, threw less punches but tried to strike one that would knock Garcia out but found it difficult to get close enough.

Benavidez managed to deliver a solid right hand in the third round, but Garcia was able to deflect all danger away from his body with a straight right hand. Garcia was moving considerably more and delivering his combos to the body and face while Benavidez was fairly static and did not hit as hard as the two fighters were in the middle of the ring.

In the fifth round, Garcia made fun of Benavidez by offering his face and raising both hands while grinning. Benavidez accepted the bait and started chasing Garcia around the ring. Danny was far more effective; he made quick throws that nearly always connected. Garcia managed to connect with a hook to the liver in the seventh round before finishing him off with a straight right to the face. Benavidez was motionless and appeared to be in need of rest.

Benavidez finally managed to break through Garcia’s defense in the ninth round, landing two devastating right hands. Danny was able to survive the punches but did not react to the offence. As the battle entered the twelfth round, Garcia felt confident he had won. Garcia challenged Benavidez to a punch-for-punch duel before coming out for the legs, displaying his tongue, opening his arms, and jabbing him.
