Prediction

The No. 1 player in the world, Daniil Medvedev, will square off against fiery Australian Nick Kyrgios.

Over the past few months, Medvedev has accomplished amazing milestones. At the 2021 US Open, the World No. 2 stopped Novak Djokovic from completing the calendar-year Grand Slam by defeating him in the championship match and winning his maiden Major. He first attained the status of World No. 1 in February of this year, which he retained for two weeks. After regaining the top spot in June, he has been there ever since. He is, however, retaining both his US Open championship and his number-one ranking this week.

While Kyrgios lost one set to Benjamin Bonzi, Medvedev hasn’t yet dropped a game thanks to his intense attention and strong play. The top seed enters as a defending champion and has advanced at least to the final four in his last three appearances, while Kyrgios is making his ninth trip to New York and is in the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in his career. Their previous experiences in New York have been very different.

At the Australian Open this year, Medvedev and Kyrgios played one best-of-five match, with the Russian coming out on top in four sets. The World No. 25 has the ability to pull off a massive upset, but if Medvedev can force the match into five sets, he will probably prevail.
