Prediction
Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem’s matchup in the second round of the 2022 Erste Bank Open is expected to be quite exciting on Thursday.
Medvedev took a short vacation from the tour after the birth of his first kid to recover from an injury and spend time with his family. He returned to the circuit and played Nikoloz Basilashvili in Vienna’s opening round. The Russian gained an early advantage in the first set by going up 3-0 and collecting a break.
The two then continued to serve consistently for a few games after that. Basilashvili’s serve was broken by Medvedev once more in the closing moments of the set to secure victory. He kept the momentum going in the second set by breaking serve in the fourth game to lead 3-1. Later, when Basilashvili was serving to stay in the match and the score was 5-2, the former World No. 1 broke his rival’s serve once more to win 6-2, 6-2.
On the other hand, Thiem’s first-round opponent was Tommy Paul. The American twice broke the former US Open champion’s service to grab a 4-0 lead in the opening set. He continued to play well, and he eventually succeeded in taking the set. Both players had a couple break point opportunities in the second set, but neither was able to capitalise on them. Thiem won the ensuing tie-break to take the set and set up a championship game. Paul led 3-0 in the last set when Thiem broke back on serve. The Austrian defeated the opponent 2-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6, saving a several match points along the way (6).
Medvedev easily defeated Basilashvili in the first round. With 16 successful serves and just seven unforced errors, he served well. On the other hand, Thiem almost lost his first match before pulling off an incredible comeback against Paul. He blasted 40 home runs while also making 28 unforced errors. The former World Number One rarely finds himself on the defensive thanks to his ability to control Thiem’s massive backhand. Medvedev also has an advantage when it comes to serving, which will likely give him an edge. The Russian should be able to prevail even though Thiem has recently made significant progress.
