Medvedev started the season by finishing second at the Australian Open and leading Russia to the ATP Cup semifinals. Then, after making it to the Mexican Open’s final four, he successfully defended his position as the top player in the world for the first time. He arrived in the Miami Open quarterfinals despite leaving Indian Wells early.

After undergoing minor surgery, Medvedev was sidelined for a few weeks. After returning to the circuit, he was defeated in the second round of the Geneva Open. He still advanced to the fourth round of the French Open after that. Then, during the grass swing, he reached a lot of finals, but Wimbledon was postponed because Russian players were forbidden from competing.

Medvedev earned his first title of the year at the Los Cabos Open, and he also made it to the Cincinnati semifinals. His title defence at the US Open was ended in the fourth round by Nick Kyrgios. After that, Stan Wawrinka upset him in the Moselle Open second round. At the Astana Open, the Russian showed excellent competition, but a sickness forced him to quit his semifinal match against Novak Djokovic early. Medvedev won his second title of the year last week in Vienna. He gained a first-round bye this week in Paris since he was the fourth seed.

On the other hand, In Paris, Alex de Minaur faced Sebastian Korda to open his campaign. Early in the first set, the Australian successfully broke serve to take a 2-0 lead. To win it, he maintained his lead to the very end of the set. In the second set, Korda was the first to lead by a break, but de Minaur rallied to tie the score at 3. Toward the end of the set, the American broke his opponent’s serve once more to win it. Korda got four break points at the start of the third set but missed them all. It ended up costing money as de Minaur easily won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 after grabbing a break in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead.

After winning the tournament in Vienna, Medvedev appears to be back to his best. He only dropped one set last week, and for the most part of the competition, he served quite well. He dominated immediately away, and it’s challenging to match his dependability. Although De Minaur’s defensive skills can undoubtedly level the playing field, he won’t be able to annoy Medvedev by depending solely on them.
