Head To Head: 1-0

Collins leads the game 1-0 over Vekic. She defeated Vekic in three sets in the 2018 Miami Open.

Prediction

On Saturday, qualifier Donna Vekic will compete in the semifinals of the 2022 San Diego Open against world No. 19 Danielle Collins.

Martina Trevisan, who advanced to the 2022 French Open semifinals, and World No. 10 Caroline Garcia were the opponents in Collins’ first two victories. She faced fourth-ranked player Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals.

In the first set, no player was able to hold onto their lead for very long, which led to numerous changes in momentum. Three times, Collins had a break advantage, but Badosa fought back to regain serve each time. In the eleventh game, a break gave the Spaniard a 6-5 lead, but she was unable to win the set since she dropped serve in the following game. Collins made the vital break and increased her lead with a serve hold to go 5-3 up in the eighth game of the set. She ran into a small snag as the match was winding down, but she still won 7-6 (5), 6-4 after fending off a few break points.

Donna Vekic advanced to the main draw of this competition by winning a few matches in the qualifying rounds. Prior to upsetting former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova, she previously defeated World No. 7 Maria Sakkari. She was unable to advance to the semifinals after losing to Aryna Sabalenka, the fifth-ranked player in the world.

Near the end of the first set, Vekic broke her opponent’s serve twice to win. With three successive serve breaks to start the second set, the Croat took the lead and eventually won 2-1. By returning to serve later in the set, Sabalenka was able to force a tie-break. A decisive game was required since the Belarusian won the tie-break. Vekic demonstrated her dominance in the match-deciding set by winning five straight games to win 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1.

Collins needs to serve against the Croat more effectively. She committed 10 double faults in her quarterfinal match against Badosa. Her wobbly serve was the only imperfection, otherwise, everything was perfect. When she simply demolished it with her backhand, the Spaniard even flung her racquet down in annoyance.

Vekic was certainly capable of winning her previous match, but a minor performance hiccup cost her. She did well to bounce back quickly, but this mistake might hurt the American. Collins is anticipated to end her run at this point, but the Croat has been playing outstanding tennis all week.
