Khachanov started his campaign in Vienna by taking on qualifier J.J. Wolf in the first round. Both players had break point opportunities early in the first set, but they passed them up. The set ultimately went to a tie-break, which the Russian won to take the match.

The pair successfully defended their serve in the second set as well. The set looked like it would go to a tie-break until the very last point. Wolf was serving to stay in the match at 6-5 when Khachanov made his move. The Russian quickly broke his opponent’s serve to win the match 7-6 (4), 7-5.

On the other hand, Dan Evans was originally supposed to face Matteo Berrettini in the first round, but the Italian withdrew due to an injury. The Brit was then paired with Oscar Otte, a lucky loser. Evans immediately broke the opponent’s serve twice to take the lead 4-1 in the opening set of the match. Otte showed some tenacity by winning the next two games to make the final score 4-3. The German then saved a few set points on his serve to get to 5-4.

Evans confidently served out the set to win the next game. Otte jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set thanks to a powerful start. Prior to being broken, he kept the advantage and even served the set at 5-3. In the end, the British player won the tie-break to win the set and the match 6-4, 7-6. (3).

Despite having a better season than the British player, Khachanov may continue to lose if he doesn’t make a small change to his strategy. Evans is a tough opponent to play against and might be up to the task of unseating the Russian once more.
