The World Chess Championship 2024 final is all set to begin very soon, featuring an intense series of matches vs D Gukesh and Ding Liren with the match schedule, date, time and format now out

India’s D. Gukesh will face off against defending champion Ding Liren across 14 matches from November 25 and December 13.

Up until now, the tournament has had just 17 World Champions, and this year’s winner will be the 18^th winner.

18-year-old D. Gukesh will become the youngest winner in the competition’s history if he beats Ding Liren of China.

2024 World Chess Championship format

The 2024 World Chess Championship final match between D. Gukesh and Ding Liren will feature a series of 14 matches. The first player to score a total of 7.5 points will be declared the winner. In the event that the match ends in a tie after all 14 games, players will compete in a tiebreak on the following day to determine the winner.

World Chess Championship 2024 full schedule

The World Chess Championship match will feature a series of 14 classical games, with each game following a control of 120 minutes for the first 40 moves. Following which, the players will get 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move, which starts from move 41. Given below is the full schedule of matches, with all games starting at 2:30 PM IST (17:00 local time).

World Chess Championship 2024 tie-breaks rules

In the event of a tie, the World Chess Championship will use the following ttiebreaks

Rapid Match

The two players will compete in four games, which will be 15 minutes per side with a 10-second increment. The first player to score 2½ points will win the match.

Mini Rapid Match (if tied)

Players will compete in two games, which will be 10 minutes per side with a 5-second increment. The first player to score a total of 1½ points will win the match.

Blitz Match (if still tied)

If the players are still tied, they will compete in two games, 3 minutes per side with a 2-second increment. The first player to score 1½ points will win the match.

Sudden Death Blitz (if still tied)

If in case the players are still tied, they will compete in Single blitz games with 3 minutes per side and a 2-second increment. Players will compete in alternating colours until one player wins. Players will draw lots to determine who will play White before each mini-match.

World Chess Championship 2024 total prize money

The upcoming competition will feature a total prize money worth $2.5 million (around ₹20.8 crore). Notably, each player will earn $200,000 (₹1.67 crore) for every game that they win. Meanwhile, the remaining prize money will be split equally between the players. In the event of a tiebreak, the winner will get $1.3 million (₹10.83 crore), while the loser gets $1.2 million (₹10 crore).
