Tournament Format, Rules, and Prize Money Pool

A rapid chess round-robin amongst the top 10 grandmasters precedes a double round-robin of blitz in the format. This format was designed with the idea that blitz and rapid chess will keep viewers alert and make them eagerly anticipate the games each day. The first three days of the tournament included rapid chess matches, and now the next two days will feature blitz chess matches.

A ten-player single round-robin rapid chess event with a time limit of 25 minutes for all moves and a 10-second increment from move one, was played throughout the course of the first three days. Over the course of the final two days of the competition, 18 rounds of 5+2 blitz will be played. The Zagreb tournament is set to go down to the wire since in addition to Firouzja, Magnus Carlsen and Wesley So are also trailing Jorden by just one point. With 18 rounds of 5-minute blitz match stretched throughout Saturday and Sunday, the Zagreb event is headed for a nail-biting ending.

Jorden van Foreest only managed two victories in 27 games during the 2021 Croatia Grand Chess Tour, with none coming in rapid play, and he came in last place. The 23-year-old Dutch star ended the rapid phase in the lead after winning five games while no one else managed more than three, which is something no one could have expected a year earlier.

Jorden started off Day 3 with an easy victory over Veselin Topalov before opting for an unconventional opening and losing to Magnus Carlsen.
Jorden then faced Alireza Firouzja in the day’s final round. Alireza only needed a draw in the decisive round to ensure at least a tie for first place in the rapid stage. A tie appeared certain, but in the middlegame Alireza completely lost his marbles and came under a devastating attack, which gave Jorden the victory.
