Shakeel reached a double century and was still at 208 when the final wicket went while batting alongside No. 11 Abrar Ahmed. Pakistan’s decisive 149-run lead could be crucial as the Test progresses. After returning on 69*, the Pakistan middle-order hitter extended the visitors’ comeback from 101/5. When Agha Salman was knocked out for 83, the score was 278; nonetheless, Shakeel continued to carry Pakistan.
His double century is just the second in the previous seven years and the 45th by a Pakistani batsman in Test cricket. In Harare in 2021, Abid Ali scored 215* against Zimbabwe. In addition, Shakeel is only the second Pakistani batter to record a double-century in his debut Test match outside of his country of origin.
Shakeel’s batting average after Pakistan’s first innings in Galle is astounding—it’s higher than Sir Donald Bradman’s record of 98.5 for everyone who has batted more than ten times in a Test match.
His outstanding Test cricket debut by his comrade Abdullah Shafique has already been surpassed by him. Shakeel has amassed the highest runs of any Pakistani hitter in his first 11 Test innings (788), surpassing Shafique and Javed Miandad, who had scored 720 and 654 runs, respectively. In their first 11 Test innings, just seven batsmen have scored more runs overall.
Saud Shakeel goes past his highest first-class score of 187* 👏👏👏
