Sarfaraz Khan was born on 27 October 1997 at Mumbai, India. He was raised in the suburbs of Mumbai, and he was trained under his father and coach Naushad Khan. Naushad is a hard taskmaster and was also a well-known cricketer in Mumbai back in his days. He was the one who discovered talents such as Iqbal Abdullah and Kamran Khan.

Career

Domestic career

Sarfaraz Khan gained prominence in the domestic sphere after breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s 45-year-old record in 2009, aged 12 years old. He scored 439 runs off just 421 balls in his maiden Harris Shield game.

Sarfaraz then made his List-A debut in a match against Saurashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2014. His unbeaten 17 off 15 balls helped the team win in the close game. He then made his First-class cricket debut in a match against Bengal in the Ranji Trophy 2014. However, this time, he failed to impress after going out with a score of 1.

Sarfraz then joined the Uttar Pradesh Cricket team for the Ranji Trophy on his father’s insistence. However, the young middle-order batsman played in just eight Ranji games for UP across three seasons. By September 2019, Sarfaraz had played just 11 first-class matches and scored 535 runs. He had also played only 12 List-A matches and scored 257 runs with a strike rate of 96.25.

Sarfaraz then returned to Mumbai last season and served the mandatory one-year cooling-off period. There, he played against UP where he scored his first century, which he later converted into a triple-century.

U-19 Career

Sarfraz Khan has a good U-19 record. He first featured in the U-19 World Cup side in 2014 where India finished fifth. There, he managed to score 211 runs in six games, including two fifties. Khan had an average of 70.33, with a strike rate of 105.5.

Sarfaraz Khan then played in the 2016 edition of the U-19 World Cup where he finished as the second-highest run-scorer. He scored a total of 355 runs from six innings, including five scores over 50, with an average of 71. Sarfaraz Khan currently holds the record for the most number of fifties in U-19 World Cups, with seven fifties across two World Cups.

IPL Career

Sarfaraz Khan became the youngest to player to get picked up by an IPL franchise in 2015. Royal Challengers picked Sarfaraz Khan during the 2015 IPL Auction where he spent four seasons under the guidance of Virat Kohli.

At RCB, he gained much fame with his unbeaten 45 off 21 against the Rajasthan Royals. An unforgettable moment during that innings was when RCB skipper Virat Kohli bowed in front of the 17-year-old who was on his way back to the dressing room.

After his released from RCB, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) picked him for INR 25 lakhs at the 2019 IPL Auction. That year, he played eight games and made 180 runs. Sarfaraz was retained for the 2020 season.
