Michael Slater is a former Australian cricketer born on February 21, 1970, in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia. He was nicknamed as ‘Slats’ and was born to parents Peter Slater (Father) and Carole Slater (Mother).
He has two siblings, Julian Slater and Tracey Slater. Slater came from a family that was always involved in cricket. As such, it was no surprise to see Slater play the game from an early age. During his schooling years, Slater got selected for the state hockey team at Under-12, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 teams.
Eventually, Slater chose cricket over hockey as a and he was soon chosen as the captain for the New South Wales Under-16 team. Although he had to stop playing cricket due to some injuries, Slater made a comeback and joined the Under–19 state team to play in the national championships.

Michael Slater career
Michael Slater started out as a part of Australian Cricket Academy before eventually making his debut for New South Wales back in 1991. He then made his international test debut on 3 June 1993 aged 23, against England during Ashes tour of England.
Slater had a memorable debut match as he scored a half-century. He then followed up in the next match with his maiden century at Lord’s. The Australian star made his ODI debut later that year on 9 December against South Africa. However, he was not able to give his best in the ODI format.
Slater was the leading run-scorer in the 1994-1995 Ashes series with 623 runs. He also went on to score his first double-century against Sri Lanka at the WACA in Perth the following season. Later in the 1998-1999 Ashes series, Slater scored the match-winning 123 runs against England. His score amounted to an impressive 66.84 percent of his team’s entire total.
There were also some low points in his career like his susceptibility to the “nervous nineties”: Slater got was dismissed around the nineties mark nine times out of the 23.
Michael Slater retirement
Following the Test match during the 2001 Ashes tour in Oval, Slater got dropped from the team. Later in January 2006, Slater joined Nine’s Wide World of Sports cricket commentary team. He was then announced as a Sunday sports presenter for the Nine Network’s Weekend Today in 2009. He remained there until 2010. Michael is currently working as a commentator and a part of the Channel 9 commentary team.
