Animation historian Jerry Beck recently shared the news of David Steven Cohen’s death in a heartfelt Facebook post. He described Cohen as “an accomplished writer, composer, producer — animation lover and friend.” He also went on to praise Cohen’s works, which included live-action shows like Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, Alf, and Parker Lewis Can’t Lose, alongside animated classics such as ALF Tales, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and Balto. Beck concluded his tribute with the statement:
You did good, David. You won’t be forgotten.”

David Steven Cohen was an accomplished writer, producer, and composer who was born in 1967 in Brooklyn, New York City. He enjoyed an impressive career in television and film and was known for his clever storytelling. David possessed the ability to blend humor with deeper themes and became a key figure in shaping iconic animated as well as live-action shows.

Career
David’s career spanned across multiple genres, making contributions towards both animated and live-action television. He worked on several popular series such as Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, Alf, and Parker Lewis Can’t Lose. However, his most significant show in animation was his role in the creation of Courage the Cowardly Dog.
John R. Dilworth created Courage the Cowardly Dog, and the series began life as an animated short, The Chicken from Outer Space and the short was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, leading to the animated series in 1999. While Dilworth created the short and show, Cohen joined the writing crew in the first season, his first project being the third episode before becoming the head writer, writing most of the episodes in season 2 and continuing to write for the series in seasons 3 and 4. His last work in Courage the Cowardly Dog was the last episode before the series ended on November 22nd, 2002.
David Steven Cohen joined the writing team in season one, before later becoming the show’s head writer. He brought a unique blend of dark comedy and emotional depth to the series, with some of his notable episodes including Klub Katz, 1000 Years of Courage, Forbidden Hat of Gold, and The Sand Whale Strikes. Aside from the show, David also worked on Balto, The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss, and Phil of the Future.
