A promising Minnesota hockey player Cormick Scanlan, 16 years old, passed away on Christmas Day from complications stemming from a series of strokes, know his cause of death

St. Paul Capitals Hockey Association said via Facebook that Cretin-Derham Hall sophomore Cormick Scanlan passed away on Sunday, December 25 after undergoing emergency surgery to try to save his life.

The adolescent had his first stroke on December 6 and had been in the hospital ever since. Moyamoya disease, described by the Mayo Clinic as “a rare blood vessel ailment in which an artery in the skull becomes blocked or restricted,” was ultimately identified as the cause of his symptoms.

Unfortunately, Cormick’s condition deteriorated after surgery, and he passed away on Christmas Day, surrounded by loved ones. The administration of Cretin-Derham Hall issued a statement calling Cormick a “excellent student” and “brilliant young man” who “impacted so many.”

Cormick Scanlan was an intelligent and gifted young man who was successful in many areas of his life, not only hockey. While attending Cretin-Derham Hall, Cormick excelled academically and was an enthusiastic participant in the school’s storied athletic programmes. He was a devoted member of Holy Spirit Parish and was involved in numerous volunteer efforts.

Cormick played with the St. Paul Capitals Hockey Association from the time he was a youngster. Played all the way up through the Bantam division. He “barreled down the ice, beat the defenseman wide, and drove the puck hard to the net,” as his Bantam AA coach Dane Erickson put it. Because of his skill and commitment to the club, Cormick quickly gained recognition and admiration from his peers.

Cormick Scanlan was a professional hockey player with the St. Paul Capitals. On the ice, he was a formidable opponent, and he was a gifted and admired athlete. The details of Cormick’s death, however, have been the subject of much conjecture and debate.
