The first-ever “Campeonato Sudamericano de Fútbol” (South-American Football Championship), later known as the “Copa América,” was held in Argentina in 1916 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Argentine Declaration of Independence.

Meanwhile, with less than a month until the opener of this highly anticipated tournament, the Confederacion Sudamericana de Futbol (CONMEBOL), the body that oversees continental football in South America, and official hospitality provider beyond hospitality are currently putting the finishing touches on the event preparations, including venue fit-outs, menu taste tests, and match-day planning.

Meanwhile, the question arises, why is the South American hovering body, which is one of FIFA’s six continental confederations called CONMEBOL? It has a very interesting story behind it and yet, a very simple one.

What does CONMEBOL mean?

The body was formerly known as the CSF, but over time, it became general knowledge that the words “Con” (as in CONfederacion), “me” (as in SudaMEricana), and “bol” (as in FutBOL) had been combined to make the reference that the majority of fans use today; it’s CONMEBOL.

This is thought to be the case because the organisation previously used that self-referential strategy to send telegraphs with fewer words needed while the full name included a lot of characters. They so used the first, middle, and last syllables of their title as a point of reference.

Its membership count of 10 football associations makes it the least populated FIFA confederation overall.

CONMEBOL nations have won 22 Intercontinental Cups and 2 FIFA Club World Cups; national teams from Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay have won 3 FIFA World Cups, 5 FIFA World Cups, and 2 FIFA Club World Cups. Three countries namely Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay have won gold medals at the Olympics.
