In the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup, Mexico defeated the United States 2-0 on Monday night, winning for the second time ever thanks to goals from Lizbeth Ovalle and Mayra Pelayo.

The US faced its adversary 40-1-1 going into the match; their lone setback came in 2010 during Women’s World Cup qualifying, falling short 2-1.ย Argentina had earlier defeated the Dominican Republic 3-0.
The top eight CONCACAF women’s football teams will be joined by four visiting teams from the CONMEBOL zone from February 20 to March 10. The twelve teams will thereafter compete in four US cities to determine who would win.
Each team will compete in one round-robin group stage after being divided into three groups of four. The two teams who finish best in each group advance to the knockout stage, where they will be joined by the two teams that finish third in the group stage.
Along with three group winners from qualifying League A and three as-yet-to-be-determined qualifiers from the playoff round, the two Olympic competitors from the United States and Canada are among the CONCACAF auto qualifiers.
