Despite the absence of experienced veterans like Mirabai Chanu, Achinta Sheuli, & Bindyarani Devi, Indian weightlifters managed to clinch total of sixteen medals at the 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. With two medals on Sunday, India also surpassed their medal count from the previous edition.

With an impressive haul of 18 medals, the Indian senior weightlifting team wrapped up their campaign at the 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. Thanks to superb play by Indian weightlifters, India clinched eight gold medals, eight silver medals, & two bronze medals in total. Notably, this prestigious event was hosted at the Greater Noida campus of Gautam Buddha University. On Sunday, previous edition’s bronze medalist Lovepreet Singh bagged a silver medal in the men’s 109 kg, while Purnima Pandey won bronze medal in the women’s +87 kg.
During Sunday’s morning session, Lovepreet Singh placed second in the 109 kg senior division by lifting 154 kg in snatch and 187 kg lift in clean & jerk, for a total weight of 341 kg. With a combined lift of 363 kg (163 kg snatch + 200 kg clean and jerk), Fiji’s Taniela Rainibogi won the gold medal. Britain’s Andrew Griffiths, who lifted a combined total of 340 kg (155 kg snatch + 185 kg clean and jerk), won the bronze medal. Later on in the day, Purnima Pandey lifted a total of 227 kg (102 kg snatch + 125 kg clean and jerk) to win the bronze medal in the women’s +87 kg division. Meanwhile, Samoan Iuniarra Sipaia won the gold medal for lifting a total of 262 kg (110 kg snatch + 152 kg clean and jerk).
