When it comes to the Commonwealth Games, India has a long and vibrant history. So far, India has won an impressive medal tally of 503 medals at the Commonwealth Games (CWG)

This medal tally includes 181 gold medals, 173 silver and 149 bronze medals. India’s best performance in the CWG games came in the 2010 edition. This was also the same event, which they hosted, finishing in 2nd place with a medal tally of 101 medals.

India’s Impressive Medal Tally At The Commonwealth Games (CWG)

Let’s take a look at India’s history at the CWG and the medal tally in each edition since Independence.

Humble beginnings: 1954-1970

India’s first participation in the Commonwealth Games came in 1954 in the Vancouver CWG, where India failed to win any medals.

The second time India participated was in the 1958 Cardiff Games. India managed to win 3 medals— 2 gold medals and 1 silver—finishing in 8th place in the medals tally.

In the 1966 Kingston Games, India finished up at 8th place again after winning three gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals, an overall tally of 10 medals.

In the 1970 Commonwealth Games held in Edinburgh, India climbed up to 6th position. India registered 5 gold medals, 3 silver and 4 bronze, for a total of 12 medals.

India’s CWG medal tally from 1974-1990

In the 1974 Christchurch CWG, India clinched 15 medals, which consisted of 4 gold medals, 8 silver and 3 bronze. They finished in 6th place again in the medal tally table.

 India finished sixth in the 1978 Edmonton Games with 15 medals, including 5 gold medals, 4 silver medals, and 6 bronze medals.

At the Brisbane CWG1982, India won their highest medal tally till then after winning a total of 16 medals, which included 5 gold medals, 8 silver and 3 bronze. They were ranked in 6th place in the mega event.

In the Auckland Games in 1990, India won and impressive 32 medals, with 13 gold medals, 8 silver and 11 bronze, double of their previous outing. They came in at 5th in the medal tally. In this edition, Indian athletes managed to win double figure gold medals for the first time.

India’s CWG medal tally from 1994-2006

At the 1994 Victoria Games, India fell down by one spot to 6th place after winning 24 medals, which included 6 gold, 11 silver, and 7 bronze medals.

In the 1998 Kuala Lumpur CWG, India managed to clinch 25 medals, standing at 7th position overall, winning 7 gold, 10 silver, and 8 bronze medals.

At the Manchester Games in 2002, India made history by winning 69 medals, clinching 30 gold medals, 22 silver and 17 bronze. They came in at an all-time high of 4th place in the medal tally.

In the 2006 Melbourne Games, India clinched a total of 50 medals, which included 22 gold, 17 silver and 11 bronze medals. They finished fourth again that year.

India’s CWG medal tally from 2010-2018

The New Delhi CWG 2010 was India’s best display at the Commonwealth Games. India hosted the Games in this edition and finished with a record tally of 101 medals, which included 38 gold medals, 27 silver and 36 bronze. They were ranked at 2nd overall on the medals tally.

In Glasgow Games in 2014, India slipped to a disappointing 5th place in the medals tally. India won only 15 gold, 30 silver and 19 bronze medals, amassing a total of 64 medals.

In the last Commonwealth Games, held in Gold Coast in 2018, India managed to rise up to 3rd place in the medals tally with a total of 66 medals. India won 26 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze medals.
