Womenโs T20 Cricket: A Quick Overview
Cricket is a game played by two teams of 11 players each, competing against one another. The team that fields has 11 players on the field at all times, including the bowler. On the other hand, the batting team has two players on the field at a time.
Both teams will have an ‘inningโ in which they will take turns batting. What makes T20 unique is that the innings are made up of 20 “overs”, where each innings consists of six balls. This feature makes T20 one of the fastest formats in cricket, which ensures a jam-packed session with loads of action.
In a cricket match, the bowler bowls the ball towards the batter with the intent of hitting the wicket stumps. The batter, on the other hand, will try to hit the ball and score runs while avoiding getting “out”. The batter scores runs by running between the two wickets before the ball is returned to the bowler.
Besides running, batters can also score runs by hitting a four and a six. A batter gets four “runs” by hitting the ball to the field boundary, and six if the ball crosses the boundary without touching the ground. The batter is “out” if they miss the ball and it hits their wicket, or if they hit the ball and it is caught by a fielder without bouncing. The batter is also out if one of the fielders returns the ball to the wicket before the batter completes a run.
The batting team continues to the next batter until their 20 overs have finished, or until ten batters are โoutโ. When this happens, the batting and fielding teams will switch places. In the end, the team that scores the most runs is considered the winner.
Previous Commonwealth Games featuring Cricket
Previously, cricket was played once before at the Commonwealth Games. It followed a menโs 50-over competition at Kuala Lumpur in 1998, where South Africa won gold. T20 cricket will make its Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham 2022. It will also mark the first appearance of womenโs cricket too.
