Sangita Kumari tricked the Kiwi defence into allowing a goal attempt, but she was unable to complete the maneuver. The first goal for India was scored in the 30th minute thanks to Salima Tete’s strong reverse backhand. Towards the end of the second quarter, Tete hammered the ball from an angle into the goal and helped India grab the lead.
In the second half of the game, India missed a few opportunities, which kept them anxious the entire game. Sangita and Jyoti missed numerous opportunities to score due to poor positioning. During closing moments of match, Navneet committed a foul and allowed Olivia Merry of New Zealand to score an equalizer with a penalty. New Zealand’s goal unsettled momentum of the match and stretched it into penalty shootout. India controlled their nerves and managed to win the penalty shootout. In order to help India win the bronze medal, Sonika Tandi and Navneet Kaur each scored one goal, and captain Savita Punia made two saves. For the Kiwis, Megan Hull scored in the shootout.
After England defeated Australia’s women’s team 2-1 in Birmingham to win their first women’s hockey gold, Australia’s team had to settle for a second consecutive silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. Australia struggled in the attacking circle and made several costly defensive errors. Although they recovered in the fourth quarter, they lacked the finishing touch to attempt a comeback.
