After winning their final Pool A encounter against Canada on Wednesday in Birmingham, the Indian women’s hockey team glided into the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games 2022. In the third minute, India’s midfielder Salima Tete gave them the lead. The final two goals for India were scored by Navneet Kaur (22′) and Lalremsiami (51′), while the Canadian goals came from Brienne Stairs (23′) and Hannah Haughn (39′).

2022 Commonwealth Games – Women’s Hockey Teams, Groups, India vs Canada Results, Upcoming Schedule, Date, Time, And Venue
India took the initiative right away and won their first penalty corner against Canada in the third minute. The first runner stopped Gurjit Kaur’s drag-flick, but Salima Tete scored on the rebound to give India the lead. In the second quarter, Canada matched India’s energy, but a missed clearance in the 22nd minute gave India a 2-0 advantage. Navneet Kaur’s stick was connected to the Lalremsiami interception by a crisp pass, and she finished with precision.
Canada, who, according to their superior goal differential, only needed a draw from the game to advance to the semifinals, trimmed India’s advantage back to one in the very next minute from the penalty corner. Canada gained a penalty corner in the 39th minute and used it to get around the Indian defence to score the equalizer after a cagey opening to the second half.
For India, a barrage of counterattacks started to come in. India continued to pursue an offensive strategy despite being denied a goal in the 49th minute, and two minutes later scored from a penalty corner to score the crucial goal. Lalremsiami, despite being hit, came from the mayhem and scored the game-winning goal off the rebound as Canada committed significant defensive resources to preserve their prospects of making the semifinals. The Indian women’s hockey team kept up the attack for the rest of the match, preventing Canada from mounting a comeback, and securing its spot in the Commonwealth Games semifinals.
