At the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash Centre in the UK, on Sunday, the Indian men’s hockey team opened their 2022 Commonwealth Games campaign with a commanding 11-0 victory over Ghana.

As was to be expected, the Indian hockey team sped up the game to the point where they were awarded a penalty corner in the first 45 seconds. Harmanpreet Singh, the best drag-flicker in India, was lined up to score, but Abhishek’s expertly timed rebound over the Ghana goalkeeper gave India a 1-0 lead early on. India scored three goals in the first quarter, but they kept up their fast-paced play to add another two in the second. In the 20th minute, Akashdeep scored a field goal, and two minutes later, Jugraj Singh made it 5-0 for India by putting a penalty shot past Ghana goalie Duisberg Offei.

Harmanpreet scored his second goal of the game through a penalty corner in the 35th minute to start the onslaught. In the 38th minute, Nilakanta Sharma buried Jarmanpreet Singh’s PC rebound, and a minute later, Varun Kumar successfully converted a penalty corner. Jugraj Singh added his second goal from the penalty corner with a minute remaining in the third period to make it 9-0 for India.

In the fourth quarter, India kept up its unrelenting offensive and, in the 48th, got a new goal scorer in Mandeep. Five minutes later, at India’s eleventh penalty corner, Harmanpreet added his third goal, making the score 11-0 and sealing an excellent victory for India. On Monday, India, the two-time silver medalists, will face England, the No. 6 team in the world. The games against Canada on Wednesday and Wales on Thursday will come after it.
