With a couple of weeks left for the Commonwealth 2022 games, the Yorkshire Leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay has already started.

What is Queen’s Baton Relay?

The Queen’s Baton relay is a relay around the world held earlier to the beginning of the Commonwealth Games. The Baton carries a message from the Head of Commonwealth, currently, Queen Elizabeth 2.

The Baton is given to the first relay runner by the Queen herself and at the Opening Ceremony of the Games, the final relay runner hands the baton back to the Queen, who then reads the message aloud to officially start the Games. The Queen’s Baton Realy is similar to the Olympic Torch Relay.

The Queen’s Baton Relay is making its way around England. Thousands of people have been chosen to carry Baton as it makes its way to England.

•London: 2-6 June

On the ongoing Baton relay, the director of ceremonies, culture and Queen’s Baton relay said:

‘‘ It symbolises connecting people from every corner of the Commonwealth, celebrates baton-bearers who take on the challenges and marks the countdown to the biggest sporting event in the West Midlands history.’’

The places that Queen’s Baton relay will cross through its journey

The relay started from the capital, London, England during the Platinum Jubilee celebration and continue its journey across 180 places. After the Platinum journey, the relay went to the Falkland Islands and the The Isle of Man.

On July 4 it returned to England where it will cover around 2,500 miles across the UK including its tour to Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

As England is part of the Baton relay, the relay further will visit Cornwall’s Eden Project; the Lake District; Blackpool Tower and will come across the venues of the London Olympic Games 2012 as well as the game locations of the Manchester Commonwealth Games 2002.

In its final days, the Baton will travel through the West Midlands and will be transported further through an oracle.
