Athletes with disabilities were first involved in exhibition events held at the 1994 Victoria Games in Canada. In the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, athletes with disabilities were involved as full members of their national squad, making para-sports a fully inclusive International multi-sports game. Since then, the participating nations had been sending para-athletes in large numbers to compete for the glory. The para-sports in Commonwealth Games are different from the Paralympics, where a separate para-sport program is held for the para-athletes followed by the conclusion of the Olympic Games.

Whereas in Commonwealth Games, the events of para-sport are held alongside the other CWG program, that’s what is different from Paralympic events.

Talking about the inclusion of para-sport, the 2018th edition of the Commonwealth Games saw the participation of more than 300 para-athletes competing for the medals over 38 events across the seven sports including the first-ever introduced wheelchair marathon event.

The CWG, 2022, Birmingham will mark the largest ever para-sport program in the history of the Commonwealth Games. The athletes will now also compete in the new addition of a 3×3 wheelchair basketball.
