Paul O’Grady’s family and education

Paul was born to his father Patrick “Paddy” Grady, who was an Irish man while his mother was a homemaker. Paul’s name was changed from “Grady” to “O’Grady” through a mistake while doing paperwork when he joined the Royal Air Force, and since then he kept his new name for real.

Paul O’Grady after finishing school at 16, obtained a job in civil services. He served as a clerical assistant at DHSS at their Liverpool office. Paul for his additional income worked part-time in the bar of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) club based in Oxton.

Ballet dancer Andre Portasion was Paul’s husband who he started dating in 2006 and married in 2017. Teresa Fernandes was Paul’s wife from 1977 to 2005. With his friend Diane Jansen, Paul had a daughter named Sharon. He was 6ft 1in tall.

Paul O’Grady got a job at Wheatsheaf Hotel which is situated in Virginia Water, Surrey, at the age of 17, but the management accused him of stealing something, which he denied and left the job. He later shifted to London, where Paul started associating with the drag queens, which was a couple who used the stage name of the Harlequeens.

Paul made friends in the city but he was homesick and returned to Birkenhead.

Paul O’Grady presented various television shows such as The Big Breakfast from 1995 to 1996, Blankety Blank from 1997 to 2002, and Lily Live! from 2000 to 2001. He won various awards and became a well-known figure.

O’Grady later starred on BBC One sitcom Eyes Down from 2003 to 2004 and he further presented two travel documentaries for ITV. Further, he starred in 2004, presenting ITV’s daytime chat show, The Paul O’Grady Show.

O’Grady was also the presenter of the late-night ITV show Paul O’Grady Live from 2010 to 2011.  Paul did numerous shows and also published numerous books, including a four-volume memoir.

O’Grady has been appointed as a Member of the Order of British Empire in 2008 Birthday Honors for the services of entertainment. Later Paul O’Grady became the president of the British Music Hall Society 2020, taking the role of Roy Hudd.

Unfortunately, O’Grady died on the 28th of March 2023, at the age of 67. The news of Paul’s passing was confirmed by his husband Andre Portasion. According to Andre, Paul died unexpectedly but peacefully at his residence.
