Head To Head:
Prediction
Victoria Azarenka, a two-time Major champion, will face world No. 7 Coco Gauff in the 2022 Guadalajara Open quarterfinal match on Friday.
Gauff defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-6 (1), 6-3 to go to the third round, where Martina Trevisan awaited her. The two had already faced off in the French Open semifinals prior to this encounter. Gauff easily prevailed in the opening set, securing it by serving up a bagel. Trevisan missed all of his break point chances to re-enter the set, but he did have a few. In the second set, the teenager maintained the pace, bursting out to a 3-0 lead. Trevisan was able to maintain serve for the first time in the set to make it 3-1. The Italian even succeeded in breaking serve in the seventh game of the set in order to regain serve. Gauff, though, was able to take advantage of a gap once again and take a 5-3 lead.
The American teen volunteered to serve the match after that. She had a break point, but she was able to avoid it and win the game 6-0, 6-3.
On the other hand, Victoria Azarenka overcame Paula Badosa and Elina Avanesyan to move on to the third round and meet Madison Keys. The Belarusian broke her opponent’s serve twice to take a 3-0 lead. Azarenka was able to win the opening set, despite Keys winning the next two games to tie it 3-2; Keys was never able to fully overcome the early deficit.
In the second set, the former World No. 1 twice had a break advantage and even had two chances to serve for the match, but she dropped serve both times. In order to end the match, Keys successfully forced a tie-break, won it, and then forced a decider. The decisive set, however, saw the American significantly outplayed. Azarenka won six straight games to take the match 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1.
Gauff’s serve has done brilliantly so far despite being a little unpredictable. However, she hasn’t yet come across a returner of Azarenka’s energy. The Belarusian is having trouble with her own serving, as evidenced by the 12 double faults she made in her most recent encounter.
Although Gauff’s forehand is less reliable, the former World No. 1 can execute steady groundstrokes off both wings. The teenager will need to work on it over the off-season, but in the meanwhile, she’ll need to make up for it with her agility and defence.
