There’s a community for everything on TikTok, you just name it and you’ll be able to see the community regarding the same whether it’s fashion, cooking, art or any other hobby.
The cleaning community is another community of TikTok which is thriving nowadays with thousands of accounts dedicated solely for sharing satisfying videos of cleaning areas around their house. These videos often received millions of views.
What is the ‘Product Overload’ Trend?
One cleaning trend which is particularly popular these days on the platform is ‘product overload’. The trend essentially involves users to clean the particular areas of the house such as cleaning the sink, toilet etc with multiple cleaning products at one.
The products that are often being used are brightly colored. In certain videos, it was seen that commenters can request a color combination of their choice.
These clips have garnered millions of likes and views, however, a few Experts are warning that this trend could actually do harm and it is dangerous.
What are Experts Saying?
DC-based, a marine resilience specialist, Dr. Deborah Brosnan, told the Insider news that the compound used in those products which are being used in the trendy videos could disrupt marine life, particularly chlorine-based bleach as purifying systems in waterways can’t fully extract bleach.
The Marine Resilience Specialist went on to say that, “When dumped in water, chlorine in bleach reacts with other chemicals and causes the formation of dioxins which are harmful to human health and wildlife. Studies indicate that they contribute to the lowering of bird and fish populations”.
Another expert, Campaign manager at Unblocktober, Richard Leigh called the trend as ‘alarming’ and ‘dangerous’. He said in a statement that, “The amount of product used in a single one of these videos is more than many households would be using over six months”.
Another Expert/Pharmacist at Medino Digital Pharmacy in London Giulia Guerrini, warned the TikTok users about the danger of mixing chemicals together.
He went on to say that, “Many cleaning products include already-toxic chemicals that, when mixed, can be lethal when ingested or inhaled. Mixing cleaning products is something that you should never, ever, ever do, no matter how ‘pretty’ or ‘mesmerizing’ it looks”.
